We greatly appreciate the cash contributions of our generous donors. Those gifts, of course, are tax-deductible. But did you know that there are other ways you can help NHS financially -- many providing tax advantages to you, or even an income stream? Here are some of them:

a gift of stock that has gained in value

If you've bought a stock and its value has risen, your profits are subject to capital gains taxes when you sell it. But if you donate the stock directly to NHS, you get to take a deduction based on the full value of the stock, and you don't have to pay capital gains tax on the profit. Your broker just calls ours to transfer the stock. It's that easy!

gifts through life insurance plans

You can use your life insurance plan to fulfill your goals and to meet the needs of the animals helped by NHS. You can also donate your policy to NHS and get a charitable deduction.

Charitable gift annuities

You can support NHS and also receive income in your retirement years, with a charitable gift annuity. It is a contract between a charity like NHS, an insurance company, and you that says, in essence, you give us a gift and the insurance company will give you back income on that gift during your lifetime. We get what's left after you pass away. You can also qualify for a tax deduction when you make the gift, and some of the income you receive is tax-free.

Gifts of your required IRA distributions

When you reach age 72, you are required to begin withdrawing money from your qualified IRA. Those withdrawals are fully taxable. But if you donate some or all of that money from your IRA directly to NHS, you pay no taxes on the amount of the donation, and you can exclude the donation amount from your taxable income.

Gifts of real estate, vehicles, or retirement plans can also provide you with tax benefits while aiding NHS.

And there's another, easy way to help our animals in the future: Name NHS as a beneficiary in your will or trust. You'll know that you will be helping our life-saving mission even beyond your lifetime. Or, name us as a beneficiary of your bank, brokerage or IRA account. You retain full control of the account during your life, and on your death, assets would be transferred to NHS.

We will gladly work with you and your financial advisor or attorney on any of these options.

The Nassau Humane Society is a voice for those who cannot speak. Thousands of homeless, sick and abused or neglected animals have found shelter, care and comfort with NHS and gone on to loving forever homes, enriching the lives of their new families.

We have established the Legacy Circle of Love to recognize animal lovers whose gifts ensure that NHS can continue to help animals for years to come.

We invite you to join the Circle! The animals, and we, appreciate your generosity. All gifts, no matter the size, are important to us. If you’re able, we hope you will consider a donation at one of our special-recognition levels:
